One of the responsibilities of the office is to develop, with assistance of many partners, an Iowa energy independence plan. There are many aspects to the plan including strategies for reducing the state's consumption of energy, dependence on foreign sources of energy, use of fossil fuels, and greenhouse gas emissions.
The Energy Independence Plan is submitted to Governor Culver and members of the general assembly annually on December 14.
